‘Horrible Movie Night’ is the other project Susan does (besides our lovely Because Show podcast) with her husband John Mathot. Let’s all tip our hats to them for celebrating their ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of ‘roasting the rotten’. The Jay Thomas Show here had them on Sirius Radio to talk up their baby (whilst their other baby, an actual human infant should be arriving tomorrow). Congratulations, guys!
Subscribe in iTunes for the automatic downloads every week or listen in here on the blog page. Our weekly conversation on kids, cuisine and culture headed into the ice-cream aisle this week as we tasted eight different varieties of ice cream. So, here’s the scoop: Six out of eight were scrumptious, and two were revolting (listen to the whole episode to hear the winners and losers of this taste-testing!). It seems that there is a much wider selection of artisanal ice creams online to order by mail than what was available in our local supermarkets. But we okay, huh?
What we brought to the table this week: Snoqualmie Ice Gingersnap Caramel cream, Ciao Bella Sorbet, Prickly Pear flavor, Limited Edition Haagen Dazs Midnight Cookies and Cream and Banana Fosters, Mashti Malones Mango Ice Cream, Sheer Bliss Pomegranite with dark chocolate chips. La Loos Got Milk Mission Fig Gelato and Coconut Bliss Mint Galactica.
We are also doing a great ‘giveaway’ this month of the hardcover fiction release “Arm Candy” by author Jill Kargman with the Trina Turk/Clinique bag filled with additional goodies, including a hard ‘Wonder Woman’ iPhone case. If you are a listener to The Because Show podcast, then you already know that I am a frugal soul, constantly and consistently agape at the expensiveness of life in Los Angeles. Today at the Los Angeles Farmers market, I discovered one more thing to make me raise a skeptical penurious eyebrow – a 16.00$ fruit drink at eple, a pricey fruit stand. The drink is made with the exotic dragonfruit, which I was told, has an ‘earthy‘ taste – somewhere between a kiwi and jicama. I did not indulge in the dragonfruit drink, but marveled at it – and then brought Amy along to check it out, which you can hear in episode #30.
On the flip side of expensive, is ‘free’. And I also discovered a new fun thing that is free and that is called The Sporkful podcast. Not only is it free, but it is also entertaining, if you’re in the mood for some fast-paced foodie talk. The hosts remind me of some guys who I might have known in college, obsessed with finding the true essence of the perfect grilled cheese or debating the value of malted milkshakes. Give a listen and if you like ‘em, tell them you heard about it from me!
Hey guys! I may be taking our recording ‘on the road’ again this afternoon when Amy and I meet for lunch at the Los Angeles Farmers Market. The Farmers Market is a 2 minute drive from my work, and filled with a delicious variety of food kiosks. Better yet, it’s attached to the Grove, a huge outdoor mall. So, if we grab a quick bite we may have a little time to do some window shopping!
The last time Amy and I met at a mall, we recorded it on Episode #23, which you can listen to here:
Well, we don’t have a guest for our weekly The Because Show podcast, your conversation on kids, cuisine and culture, planned for tomorrow night so it will be Jerilyn, Susan and Amy together again. This week we are going to try our hand at a vidcast and see how that works out. A vidcast? yes, we may even try our hand at a ‘haul video’ like we mentioned in episode #13 way back when. And hopefully we will have enough time to record an audio companion episode to go with the vidcast, but i’m not making any promises. So wish us luck and see you on the other side!
The Because Show podcast tackles the ‘Best and Worst Things You’ve Ever Eaten’ with the help of Lynn Chen, foodie blogger of the fabulous The Actor’s Diet. Lynn was one of the participants in our Summer Food 2010 Project that we did earlier this summer where she blogged on a series of ‘summer food’ recipes, thoughts and favorites. Jerilyn, Amy and Lynn discuss avocado soup, dim sum and hemp mint ice cream. Grilled cheese. fried egg sandwiches and cheddar dogs rate among our ‘bests’. And for the ‘worsts’…well, you really have to download the episode and take a listen. In fact, make sure you’re subscribed in iTunes for the automatic downloads every week.

Lynn Chen, actress and blogger of The Actors Diet blog is coming to visit us this Thursday night to record an episode with The Because Show podcast! I first heard about her blog on my old favorite podcast Lipgloss & Laptops, (sadly now defunct). The thing I like about Lynn’s blog is not only does she post every day and add tops of good photos to her posts, but also she is finds and eats new and unusual products that sound delicious and healthy! And who doesn’t love new, unusual, delicious and healthy stuff! As a former binge eater, her foodie blog is a thoughtful look on how she chooses to eat every day. Oh, and she’s a Hollywood actress, hence the name of her blog. So looking forward to sitting down with her this week and finding out more!
Jerilyn, Amy and Susan meet author Janelle Brown to discuss her latest book ‘This Is Where We Live’ on the latest episode of the Because Show podcast. Janelle’s release is the funny/sad story of a 30-something married couple, living in Los Angeles grappling with not only a shaky marriage but also an adjustable rate mortgage and possible foreclosure of their house! Love, identity and money were also themes in her first book ‘All We Ever Wanted Was Everything’ , which is summarized as ‘pulling back the curtain on “the good life” in Silicon Valley. Just as Janice Miller’s family reaches for their moment of triumph as her husband’s pharmaceutical company goes public, making the Millers multimillionaires on paper, Janice’s world crumbles around her in a day.”
Make sure you’re subscribed to The Because Show podcast in iTunes and don’t forget to leave us a review! We love the reviews and the support and feedback from our listeners – particularly when they become our fan on facebook, follow us on twitter and link to The Because Show podcast on their own blog. Remember, we have a ‘tag-you’re it’ blog policy, where if you link to us we will happily link back. In this recent episode, we each suggested two great books to our audience – make sure you listen to the entire episode to hear our picks!
Wouldn’t it be great to have a comprehensive book that covered everything you about self-care, from head to toe? We think so. Even if you didn’t implement all the practicesm it would be nice to have them all in one place . All the basic strategies, techniques, the whats, the hows, the whys – a complete encyclopedia to flip through on a rainy day and get lost in. We think it would be super-great! That handsome Dr.Oz has a series of books like this on personal health, the You: The Owners Manual Series, which is in a similar vein, and there is a ‘Being Beautiful’ edition we may have to check out.
In this episode, we mentioned Moroccan Oil, as a styling product and treatment that is all the rage here in Los Angeles. Have you tried it? Here’s a link! Oh and keep listening for our ‘MYSTERY GRAB BAG GIVEAWAY” – it’s gonna be good!
